Census Bureau Population Estimates: PopClocks http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html
- Go over conclusions drawn from deer simulation activity.
- Notes- human population growth:
- class discussion
- food for thought TED lecture
- AAAS- articles on human population growth.
a. Is the human population growing exponentially or logistically (exponentially)
b. What is the carrying capacity of the planet for the human species? (this is still being debated by scientists, although estimates have been proposed since the 1600s; the average estimates seem to cluster around 10-15 billion, depending upon the consumption rate used in the calculations).
c. When will the planet reach its point of
overpopulation? (that depends on what you
think is overpopulated; but if carrying capacity could be estimated in some way, then you could project the time until this point using the current growth rates)
